spiritual direction
I've read some powerful definitions of what Spiritual Direction is and whether or not it has a place in our culture. There was a time I thought it only foolishness, but that was a time when people populated the world for me, when my agendas were most important and building a highway was everything, even though its final destination was obscure. Just build it.
As my close friend Elmer says, "You have to understand ..." life is not all about you. That is easy to say, easy to understand, but I wonder how many people comprehend what it means to the point they intentionally apply it to their relationships? When you tell someone 'life is not all about you' do you say it also to yourself?
Marriage is both an intense training ground as well as the most intimate of rewards, but even in marriage so many people just don't see it. If your life is all about you than what is necessary first, is to come to the realization that it isn't. Sadly, some people die thinking the world will end, now that they are gone.
Spiritual formation is about drawing closer to God and in drawing closer to God drawing closer to others. It is about reconciliation. It is not magic, it is work, prayerful work, but work none the less. Life's answers are NOT to be found in a Spiritual Director. They are found in your relationship to God and your relationships to others.
Mostly I listen to my directees and ask questions. I have no illusions of who I am or what I can do. I stress they should understand that too. We have a conversation and we intentionally invite Jesus Christ into that conversation. It can be with or without candles, with or without coffee, casual or formal, as long as it is a safe place to be who we are with confidentiality, candidness, and intentionality.
There are many elements in our life we rarely see; air, electricity, etc. We cannot define cold, except in the absence of heat, night, except in the absence of light. Who can define love? To live without relationships is not to live, so understanding our relationship to God and how that relationship affects our relationships with one another is everything.
I cannot express my sense of self, in relationship with others, as well as John Donne already has. I have read the following many times, but it always seems new. He wrote this when he was ill and expecting to die. The plague was again raging through the streets with devastating impact. It was a time we cannot imagine, but his understanding of how each of us is a bit of fabric woven into a garment of many colors in the hands of God is beautiful.
